Tap the PRESTO device each time you board a bus or at the station before you board your train. Tap again when you exit.

GO Transit fares are calculated based on distance travelled. If you don’t have a default trip set on your PRESTO card, credit or debit card, and you forget to tap off at the end of your trip, the fare to the last stop on the train line or bus route will be deducted from your PRESTO card with your fare type and any applicable loyalty discounts applied.

There is a 3-hour travel window to complete your GO trip. Transfers are automatically applied when transferring between GO buses, from GO buses to GO trains, or from GO trains to GO buses. Transfers between GO Transit and other transit agencies also have to take place within 3 hours.

Using PRESTO

GO Transit fares are calculated based on the distance travelled. Most GO customers pay a base fare of $3.70 when they tap on to travel using PRESTO if they don’t have a default trip set to their PRESTO card.

When you tap on, PRESTO will recognize your fare type (adult, student or senior) and apply loyalty discounts as applicable. When you tap off at the end of your trip, PRESTO will deduct the remaining amount of your fare based on the distance travelled.

You need to make sure that you have enough funds on your PRESTO card when you tap off to cover the total cost of your trip.

If your card has been added to a PRESTO Account, you can go into a negative balance to pay for one trip as long as you have at least the minimum base fare on your card.

Always remember to tap off at the end of your trip to ensure you’re charged the correct fare. If you forget to tap off, the fare to the last stop on the train line or bus route will be deducted from your PRESTO card with your fare type and any applicable loyalty discounts applied.

If you are taking a trip for which you have a Default Trip set on your card, the entire fare will be charged to your card when you tap on.

Setting and overriding a default trip

If you travel between the same two GO Train stations consistently, you can have a default trip set on your PRESTO card or contactless credit card including in a mobile wallet. For contactless debits cards, default trips can only be used when tapping a plastic debit card – default trips are not available when tapping with a phone or watch.

A default trip means you only tap on a PRESTO device at the beginning of your train trip and you don’t need to tap off at the end of your train trip. Default trips are only for GO Train trips, not for GO Bus trips.

You can set up a default trip through the PRESTO App, or in person by visiting a GO Customer Service Outlet. Watch a video tutorial on how to setup a GO default trip through the PRESTO app.

If you set or changed a GO Default Trip while on a GO train, your new Default Trip settings won’t take effect until your next trip.

If you want to travel from one of your default stations to a different station, press the Mode button on the PRESTO device one time and then tap your PRESTO card to override your default trip.

Tap off at the end of the trip. Your default trip will be automatically reset when you tap off.

You do not need to override your default when you start a trip at a different station or when travelling by GO Bus.

Transferring to/from local transit agencies

Enjoy free travel on most local transit when you connect with GO Transit using your PRESTO card, or contactless credit or debit cards on participating transit agencies. Travellers connecting to or from GO Transit and local transit will receive a discount. Your discount will be applied automatically when you tap to transfer.
