What happens when the fare type expires?

Adult

Everyone!

All PRESTO cards are adult by default.

No ID required.

Never expires.

Child

Note: On OC Transpo, children must not use a PRESTO card.

Ages 6-12

Note: Pre-school children under 5 travel free (without a PRESTO card) when accompanied by a fare-paying customer.

After the child’s 6th birthday, visit a participating Shoppers Drug Mart or a Customer Service Outlet location to set up their card. Proof of age is required.

Proof of age is required.

Expires on the child's 13th birthday and does not automatically switch to a Youth fare type.

Youth

Ages 13-19

After your 13th birthday, visit a participating Shoppers Drug Mart or Customer Service Outlet location to set up your card. Proof of age is required.

Senior

Ages 65+

After your 65th birthday, visit a participating Shoppers Drug Mart or Customer Service Outlet location to set up your card. Requires proof of age with photo ID.

Post-Secondary Student travelling on Toronto Transit Commission (TTC)

Enables purchase of TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass for students.

Ages 20 to 64

AND enrolled full-time as a post-secondary student at an approved school.

Get your TTC Post-Secondary ID from Bathurst Subway Station.

Then set up your PRESTO card at a nearby Shoppers Drug Mart with your TTC ID.

TTC Post-Secondary ID is required.

Expires annually on October 31st.

To apply for next year's Post Secondary fare type, visit the TTC website in August for the application start date.

Post-Secondary Student travelling on GO Transit or UP Express

Ages 20 to 64

AND enrolled full-time as a post-secondary student at an approved school.

Apply for a GO Student ID online.

Once approved, you will receive an email with your electronic GO Student ID.

If you travel on GO (and not UPE), redeem the unique PRESTO Voucher code in the email. 

If you also travel on UPE, set up your PRESTO card at a nearby Shoppers Drug Mart with your GO ID.

GO Transit Student ID is required.

Expires annually on October 31st.

Apply for next year's Post-Secondary fare type starting August 30th.

Post-Secondary Student travelling on Hamilton Street Railway (HSR)

U-Pass

Enrolled full-time as a post-secondary student at Mohawk College, McMaster University or Redeemer University.

Get the HSR U-Pass PRESTO Voucher code from your school’s student portal and redeem it on your PRESTO Account.

Student ID from Mohawk College, McMaster University, or Redeemer University is required.

Expires annually in the 3rd week of August.

How to set up the fare type

Adult

Physical PRESTO cards

Physical PRESTO cards can only have one fare type, either: 

  • a universal (Adult, Child, Youth, or Senior) fare type, or

  • a transit agency specific fare type.

If you have a universal fare type set on your card, you will be charged this universal fare type across all transit agencies.

If you have a transit agency specific fare type, you will be charged the transit agency specific pricing when using that agency, and for all other transit agencies you are charged the universal fare type. The default PRESTO fare type is Adult.

For example, if you have the TTC Fair Pass Fare Type, you will be charged the Fair Pass price on TTC, and an Adult fare on other agencies.

  • Using the PRESTO app. Sign into the PRESTO app, select your card, click the “i” icon, and select the 'Info' tab.

  • Using the PRESTO Website. Sign in on the website, under ‘My Cards’ select your card and choose ‘Card Settings’

  • Using a PRESTO Fare Vending Machine

  • At select retail locations or a Customer Service Outlet

PRESTO in Mobile Wallet 

PRESTO in Mobile Wallet cards can have multiple fare types: 

  • one universal fare type (the Child fare type is unavailable for PRESTO in Mobile Wallet) and

  • multiple transit agency specific fare types.

If you have a universal fare type, you'll pay that fare on any transit agency that uses PRESTO.

If you have multiple fare types (e.g. Adult, TTC Fair Pass & GO Post-Secondary Student), you'll be charged the transit agency specific pricing when using that agency, and for all other transit agencies you'll be charged the universal fare type that you've set on PRESTO in Mobile Wallet.

  • Using the PRESTO app. Sign into your PRESTO account, select your card, click the “i” icon, and select the 'Info' tab. If you have multiple fare types, you can select “View More” to see all your fare types.

  • Using the PRESTO website, Sign into your PRESTO account, select the profile icon on the top right corner, select your card.

  •  

PRESTO Contactless (Credit/Debit)

At this time, you cannot add a fare type to a contactless credit or debit card. When using PRESTO Contactless, you'll be charged an Adult fare. Visit PRESTO Contactless to learn more.

How many Fare Types can I have?

How Fare Type discounts are applied

Physical PRESTO cards

If you have a universal fare type set on your card, you will be charged this universal fare type across all transit agencies.

If you have a transit agency specific fare type, you will be charged the transit agency specific pricing when using that agency, and for all other transit agencies you are charged the universal fare type. The default PRESTO fare type is Adult.

For example, if you have the TTC Fair Pass Fare Type, you will be charged the Fair Pass price on TTC, and an Adult fare on other agencies.

PRESTO in Mobile Wallet

If you have a universal fare type, you'll pay that fare on any transit agency that uses PRESTO.
